- Start date: 4 October 2016
- Age When Completed: 59
- Direction Walked: North to South
General Comments
Allowed 50-60 days. Took 38. Was easier than expected. To maintain a reasonable distance each day. Track generally well marked and maintained. Did not look at maps before starting. Enjoyed getting new one out and working out logistics. Could make it easier if done again.
Food/Supplies Comments
The longest distance was Kalamunda to Dwellingup - 200 km. So mailed food every 200 km: Balingup - Northcliffe - Walpole.
Carried too much food.
Favourite Section
Loved the trees but coastal walk was nice.
Highlights
Trees: Karri, Jarrah, Tingle, Mari. Size - shape - all good. Wildflowers - no previous great interest but with the extended rain it was a bumper year. Variety - colours - quantity, especially after being burnt.
Personal Reactions
Enjoyment - time to think. Loved being on my own. Did not share shelters. Always in tent. Loved every minute. Stress free.
Wildlife
Surprised how little - compared to east coast. Emu and echidna - nice. Black cockys great, most common - snakes. But no problem.
Your Best Equipment
Hiking poles - first time. Quilt rather than sleeping bag. Osprey pack.
Your Worst Equipment
All worked well. Should have worn a boot rather than shoes with weight carried and distance walked. It is all a compromise.
Advice for Others
Just do it.
