Personal Reactions

Walking in to Albany on the last day of the hike, I reflected on how I want to live my life based on what I’d learned.

In the few months since I wrote it, it’s been a helpful guide to help me re-calibrate and I’m looking forward to referring back to it throughout 2023.

In my life I want:
- more fiction and less news
- more stillness and less busy-ness
- more creation and less consumption
- more listening and less speaking
- more compassion and less judgement
- more respect and gratitude for my body and less criticism and harsh assessment
- less people-pleasing and more listening to my body/ gut and thinking “what do I want?”
- more listening to my own knowing and less seeking answers outside myself.

I think about putting my ladder up the “right wall” (Joseph Campbell); but do I need to be clearer about what that wall is and is not?

The Wrong Wall:
- too much wine/ alcohol
- too many clothes
- lessons in too many things
- eating out too often
- over-eating
- over-committing.

The Right Wall:
- fresh food
- stretching, walking, yoga
- meditation
- photography/ writing
- leaving time and space in life.

Wildlife

Waddling Echidna between Ball Creek and Helena was cute. The dugite waiting at Nullaki, not so much…

Your Best Equipment

Soto Windmaster Stove.

Your Worst Equipment

Expensive rainpants - spectacular fail - I put them on back to front in the pouring rain on day one and they split! Also, despite having side zips they couldn’t get over my boots. Ugh.

Advice for Others

Take your earplugs - the Sea to Summit sleeping mats that loads of people have are insanely squeaky and noisy.
