Water tanks reinstated at Helena and Waalegh campsites

DBCA announces water tank replacements Helena and Waalegh campsites

Walkers will be pleased to hear that the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) has installed replacement water tanks at Helena and Waalegh campsites following the recent theft of three rainwater tanks from huts along the Bibbulmun Track.

The large tanks were taken in what authorities described as a deliberate and determined act. Speaking to ABC Perth, Parks and Wildlife Service WA Swan Regional Manager Benson Todd said the tanks had been disconnected, drained and removed from the remote sites, likely requiring significant effort to transport them out.

The loss of the tanks was a blow to walkers, with rainwater supplies forming an important part of campsite infrastructure along the Track’s 49 shelters, which are typically spaced a day’s walk apart.

While hikers are always encouraged to be self-sufficient with water, the reinstated tanks restore an important supplementary source for those travelling through the area.

The incident has been reported to WA Police, and investigations are ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
