Members Night: Wildflower Wander

In 2020, as COVID-19 swept the globe, Ian Kininmonth and his wife Helen found themselves, along with two million others, stranded in Western Australia.

The couple had planned a gap year, kicking it off in July with a ride along the Munda Biddi Trail. But when they returned to Perth, they discovered the state was still in lockdown. Not ones to sit idle, Ian proposed another adventure: an end-to-end trek on the Bibbulmun Track.

Both passionate orchid hunters, they had good reason for their timing. Ian’s research revealed that the southwest of Western Australia was home to around 400 species of orchids, many of which would be in bloom just as they planned to walk. The conditions were perfect.

Their personal best? Spotting 40 different orchid species in just four days. With 60 days on the Bibbulmun ahead of them, the numbers spoke for themselves – and so did the challenge.

So, in mid-September, boots laced and field guides in hand, they set off! Join Ian on this wildflower-fueled journey
