Erosion control targeted at latest Field Day
A huge thank you to the 20 Maintenance Sectional volunteers who participated in our latest Field Day in the Mount Dale area.
On a spectacular sunny day, they worked across two sites – north of Darkin River Road and on the loop around the summit of Mount Dale.
The main focus was the prevention and remediation of erosion on the Track.
The volunteers learnt about the significant impact that water can have on the trail surface, how to identify the best locations for erosion control structures, and how to maintain them to ensure they work effectively to protect the Track.
They then had the opportunity to put theory into practice by installing multiple new waterbars and steps. In the process, they improved erosion control where seasonal water flow had already started to establish erosion channels, and improved the Track where it ran down slope.

Our volunteers threw themselves into the challenge with enthusiasm and determination, completing all planned works by the end of the day. Across the two sites, we installed or repaired 18 water bars and around 30 steps. Their efforts will help keep these sections of the Track safer, more sustainable and enjoyable for all walkers.
Clear marking guides walkers through the picnic area
Meanwhile, at Mount Dale the Track marking was improved near the picnic area, following reports from walkers of uncertainty and confusion.
The marking now clearly incorporates the approx. 2.5 km day walk loop around the Mount Dale summit – marked using a blue and white boot symbol – as well as the through-route of the Bibbulmun Track.
