- Start date: 21 August 2011
- Age When Completed: 54
- Direction Walked: North to South
General Comments
well maintained Track through a variety of landscapes and charming towns. Shelters are fabulous, I had a lot of night rain. People met on the Track without exception were friendly and positive. Anyone interested in bush walking in Australia should do this Track.
Food/Supplies Comments
More than adequate for my need. Donnelly River now has a great selection, North Bannister still has nothing, but I catered for that possibility.
Favourite Section
Mt Cooke to Nerang, Possum Springs to Yourdemung, Frankland to Giants.
Highlights
Karri and tingle forests in the south, jarrah and marri up north. Wildflowers on the coast, especially showground and Denmark to Albany. Reading other peoples accounts in the logs. Getting to know people you will never even meet, small flowing creeks.
Personal Reactions
I expected a great walk as friends had done it earlier in the year, but it was better than I anticipated. I learnt a lot about south west of WA, history, flora, fauna, people.
Wildlife
Kangaroos, quenda, bushrats, possums, snakes, bobtails, goannas, birds, birds, birds and sadly several feral cats.
Your Best Equipment
My 34 year old external frame backpack, my Petzl headtorch.
Your Worst Equipment
My 5 degree sleeping bag not quite adequate for frosts and Nerang & Gringer.
Advice for Others
Don’t put it off, make time and do it and once started, if the going gets tough, just keep going - it’ll be worth it.
