Walking through jarrah forest in the Perth Hills.
Located in the Perth hills, Kalamunda hosts the Bibbulmun Track Northern Terminus. Although just 30 minutes away from most Perth suburbs, it feels a world away from city life. The actual townsite of Kalamunda was approved in 1901. The name is derived from the Aboriginal words 'Cala' (home) and 'Munnda' (forest) - 'home in the forest'. At the turn of the century, the Premier of WA decided that the cities of Perth and Fremantle needed a sanatorium where people could escape from the bustling metropolis and enjoy fresh air and relaxation. Kalamunda was then established as a holiday town and from 1913, Kalamunda was advertised as a 'health resort'.

Heritage buildings

The Bibbulmun Track reaches Collie via wonderful stands of jarrah, marri and sheoak forest, with the huge variety of wildflowers in the springtime an added bonus. On the southern edge of town the Collie River meanders alongside part of the Track. In the warmer months, walkers are tempted to enjoy a dip in its clear waters.
