Inlet Crossings - Bibbulmun Track Foundation

We always advise that you visit the Current Track conditions page supplied by DEC for the full list of Track conditions.

See the Track town pages or click on the links below for more information on inlet crossings.

Walkers please be aware that although we update the Inlet and Beach Access news as accurately and often as possible, changes may still occur at short notice that have not yet reached the web update. Please always use your best judgment, and if in any doubt use the mapped diversion route and/or contact the local DEC district office before heading out.

Check the tides

It is a good idea to check the tides if you are crossing inlets on the sandbar.  Try to cross at low tide if the channel is open. Walking along the beach on low tide usually means walking on firm sand. Click here to check tides (then click the approproate dot on the map).

Irwin Inlet  (Peaceful Bay section)

Always use the canoes provided to cross the inlet.

Parry Inlet (Peaceful Bay/Denmark section)

The sandbar can now be crossed (20/12/11). If at anytime walkers are unsure about the crossing and feel that the sandbar across the inlet cannot be crossed, walkers should follow the diversion marked on the map 7b or the Southern Guidebook.

Walkers should still check the tides before their journey. This inlet crossing is usually achieved except in times of heavy rainfall or in late winter.

Contact the DEC Walpole office for more information.

Wilson Inlet (Denmark section)

Sand bar at Wilson Inlet

Wilson Inlet Sandbar Breach
The Wilson Inlet sand bar has not yet fully formed (as at 20/12/11) since it was breached in mid-July. Walkers cannot cross at Ocean Beach until the bar has formed again once waters receed. With heavy rainfall this could take some months. We recommend that walkers contact the Denmark Shire Ranger for up-to-date information on (08) 9848 0300.

Between Spring and early Autumn a boat is available to take walkers across from Denmark depending on the water level allowing access to the jetty. See the Denmark Track Town Page for more information.

Walkers should note that unless the inlet is drained, parts of the Track along the shores of the Nullaki Peninsula may become inundated during muchof the year. Levels around 600mm deep can be experienced. If walkers are not prepared to wade through this section, Nullaki Drive could be used as an alternative. This is a sealed public road, so please be cautious of vehicles.

If the sand bar forms and there is any doubt about your ability to cross the bar at Ocean Beach then you are advised to arrange alternative transport to go around to the Nullaki Peninsula. You will find more information about crossing the Wilson Inlet on the Denmark 'Track town' page.     Check the tides.

Torbay Inlet (Albany section)

Torbay Inlet - Sandbar formed (as at 20/12/11). Walkers can currently cross the sandbar.

Typically when this inlet sandbar is breached it carves a deep channel through to the ocean. After a few days, the water flow will reduce but walkers should use extreme caution if attempting to cross shortly after a breach. The sand bar can usually be crossed safely except in times of heavy rainfall. Depending on weather conditions and tide, surges from the ocean may unbalance walkers. Check the tides.

If the sandbar cannot be crossed, walkers should use the green diversion route marked on map 8b and pg 283 of the Southern Guidebook. This alternate route goes around Torbay Inlet, following the Lower Denmark Rd.

You will find options about crossing the Torbay Inlet on the Denmark 'Track town' page.
