Just a reminder

Please remember that the Bibbulmun Track is a walking track only. No wheeled vehicles, including trolleys, wheelbarrows, prams and bikes should be on the Track. Please help to preserve the Track and the environment by keeping to ‘boots only’. There is no vehicle access to any campsite at any time.

Dieback and Bibbulmun Track Access

Please help stop the spread of Dieback which is killing our forests.  If there is no red or green car on the road shown on the Bibbulmun Track Map, then you are not permitted to drive on that road. You may be prosecuted if your vehicle is found in Disease Risk Areas - read your map carefully. If you have any doubts contact us. Note that green cars mean that you must walk to the Track from an access road.

People are often not aware that they are in DRA. As a guide (but not limited to) check the tables below. For areas not listed please contact us.

Remember, no red/green car = no access.

Prescribed Burns

DEC conducts a programme of prescribed burning operations during spring and autumn each year. Prescribed burning operations are undertaken for a variety of reasons, including property protection, fuel reduction and biodiversity management.

These burns are carefully planned however they may cause some disruption to walkers. Where prescribed burning operations impact on the Track, temporary diversions will be put in place. Where the Track is diverted, walkers should follow the white Waugal trail markers. Walkers should always adhere to instructions on signs posted on the Track for their own safety. Prescribed burning operations are dependent on appropriate weather conditions and as such, dates for operations are not available in advance.

As soon as we know a burn is about to take place, we will post the information on this page.

Track Conditions around Perth Hills

A total fire ban is now in place.

Track re-opened at Mt Cooke after a Bushfire

The Bibbulmun Track is now open after being closed from the Monadnocks campsite and Nerang campsite.

Walkers should proceed with caution as some parts of the fire are still smouldering.

The bushfire started Saturday 21st January was started by lightning.

Track Re-opened from Brookton Hwy to Sullivan Rock
The bushfire started on Wednesday January 4, in the Monadnocks Conservation Park is now under control. The Bibbulmun Track from Brookton Highway to Sullivan Rock including the Canning and Monadnocks Campsites is now open.

Four fires were burning along Albany Highway near the Gleneagle recreation site, Millars Log Road, Canning Mill Road, and north of the Brookton Highway at Yarra Road.

Smoke will still be present as Department of Environment and Conservation fire crews and local brigades are continuing to mop up. The fires varied in size from around 1 to 3 hectares.

The new Aircrane and four fixed-wing waterbombers assisted ground crews.

The initial fire was reported by a commercial aircraft just before lunchtime on Wednesday. DEC’s aerial surveillance detected the other fires. The cause of the fires was lightning that occurred early Wednesday morning.

North Bannister Roadhouse
The North Bannister Roadhouse is open for business again after major renovation. Its new name is 'Three Ways' (formerly 'Halfway House').

Meals and snacks are still available but no accommodation, no shower and no laundry facilities.

Parcels can be held for walkers (by arrangement) and walkers can arrange to leave their car there for the time of their walk.

Track Conditions around Dwellingup

A total fire ban is now in place.

No conditions to report although ticks are a huge problem in late spring to summer north of Dwellingup.

 Track Conditions around Collie

A total fire ban is now in place.

New permanent alignment south of Mumballup
The Track has been permanently realigned away from private property to the south of Donnybrook Boyup Brook Road at Mumballup. 1.7km of the former Track which followed the private property fence line (running south from Mumballup to Greater Preston National Park) has been closed.

From Mumballup the realignment runs further west along the former railway reserve then turns south along Hearle Road (depicted on the Bibbulmun Track map as the first gravel road to the west of the Track along the Donnybrook Boyup Brook Road), and finally east to  rejoin the former route at the top of the hill (depicted as "Scenic View" on the latest map) at the boundary of Greater Preston National Park. The realignment is 4.1km in length extending the distance between Yabberup Campsite to Noggerup Campsite from 17.7km to 20.1km.

Please note that a fire in February 2011 destroyed a culvert along the railway line and walkers must walk around it.

 Track Conditions around Balingup

A total fire ban is now in place.

Diversion Due to upgrade works to Millstream Dam
The Water Authority will be upgrading the Millstream Dam Wall and expanding the dam. The Bibbulmun Track has been affected by the clearing of bush across the Track and walkers should not attempt to walk the Track through this area.

A diversion of approximately 6 kms has been put in place and the length of the closed section of the Track is appropriately 9 km.   Please note that the diversion was originally put in place due to a planned prescribed burn and there are signs on-site to indicate this. This burn may still take place, however it is important that the diversion be taken regardless.

Balingup Brook Footbridge Closed
Due to the risk of an overhanging tree limb falling, Balingup Brook footbridge has been closed. As the brook is running swiftly, the only alternate crossings are vehicle bridges. Walkers are diverted from the intersection of the Bibbulmun track and Grimwade Balingup road, along the Grimwade Balingup road onto Walter St re-joining the Bibbulmun Track at Brooke St. This section will remain closed until weather/soil conditions allow us to use heavy machinery to remove the tree. Please contact the Recreation and Trails Unit  at DEC for further information.

Track Conditions around Pemberton

A total fire ban is now in place.

Cascades Recreation Site Closure to Vehicles
DEC would like to advise that the Cascades Recreation Site will be temporarily closed from the 28 November 2011 until 31 March 2012.  In conjunction with the Shire of Manjimup, DEC will be upgrading and sealing part of Glauder Road from the Pemberton/Northcliffe Road into the Cascades Recreation Site.

Walkers will still be able to walk to the Cascades recreation site from the Bibbulmun Track on the 500m spur track but vehilces access will not be possible.

When completed this upgrade will provide sealed access to the Cascades and will benefit tourism and businesses in the area. DEC apologises for any inconvenience but the closure is necessary to manage public safety. Any enquiries should be directed to the Donnelly District office in Pemberton on 97 761207.

Track Conditions around Northcliffe

Track Conditions around Denmark/Albany

Diversion Mazzoletti Beach - William Bay
A diversion is in place as at 21/12/11 from the south end (Denmark side) of Mazolletti Beach to William Bay Campsite due to high tides and the beach-dune access being washed away.

Walkers are asked to continue along the beach and exit at the steps at Green's Pool. Then follow the bitumen road (William Bay Rd) until they reach the Bibbulmun Track crossing and turn right to continue to William Bay campsite.  The diversion is about 600m longer.

Walkers must use extreme caution when walking along the bitumen road as cars there may travel at speed and there are a number of bends in the road obscuring walkers from a driver's line of sight.

Nullaki Campsite
Machine clearing works, associated with adjacent private property along the Bibbulmun Track, has caused disruption to the Track north (from Eden Rd) and south of the Nullaki Campsite. Two sections of the Track in the above area are now along graded constructed tracks. Walkers are asked to please carefully follow Bibbulmun Track markers and watch for vehicle and machine traffic. We apologise for any inconvenience and visual impacts.

Grasmere Wind farm - west of Hidden Valley Camp Site

The new Grasemere Windfarm is now operational.

Approximately 3km of Track immediately to the west of Hidden Valley Camp Site has recently been constructed due to the expansion of Verve Energy's Grasmere Wind Farm. Walkers are asked to bear in mind that it whilst the new section of Track is open, there still remains work to be done and walkers should take care.

Hidden Valley Camp Site remains in use. However, two of the operational turbines are in very close proximity and walkers may experience some noise.

Please refer to our news item for more information.

More information about the Grasmere Wind Farm and a map detailing closure areas can be found on the Verve Energy website. The website incorporates a live webcam so you can keep an eye on the installation of the new wind turbines.
