Production at the mine ceased in November 2001 and the site was in a phase of care and maintenance until March 2006 when a decision to proceed with the BGM Expansion Project was made. The BGM Expansion Project relates to the mining and processing of basement rock from underneath the existing BGM oxide pits.
The history of the gold mine dates back to mid-1980 when gold was first discovered on the site. Mining commenced in 1987 and by the time the mine closed, almost 5 million ounces of gold had been produced.
BGM is an active community partner and supporter of community projects and local businesses. It is the proud sponsor of the Bibbulmun Track Foundation’s 'Eyes on the Ground' maintenance programme.
BGM is owned by two joint venture partners - Newmont Australia Pty Ltd (66.67%) and AngloGold Ashanti Australia Limited (33.33%). In March 2006, Newmont acquired Newcrest’s 22.2% interest.

Lotterywest trails grants programme
The purpose of the trails grants programme is to further enhance the establishment and promotion of an integrated, statewide network of recreational trails for bush walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders.
The Bibbulmun Track Foundation is grateful for funding provided through this Programme which not only assisted with the building of the Track, but also with subsequent upgrades. Funding has also assisted with a variety of other important projects including:
