Pemberton to Donnelly River Village

The walkers reached the half-way point, Donnelly River Village on Friday 15th August after leaving Pemberton on Monday 11th August.

Here is their story...

We had a great stay in Pemberton and enjoyed the hospitality it had to offer, not to mention more great weather. We haven't had so much sunshine! Lunch was had near a blue gum plantation. It was great just to lie in the sun!

We passed through a sunny paddock and, of course, had the obligatory stile to cross over. Elsie showed us how to do it 'in style'.

Beedelup campsite (with its toilet with a different postcode as it is so far up the hill) was a pleasant first stop. The creek was flowing well and there was a magnificent display of helmet orchids next to the shelter.

Beedelup Falls was flowing well and made for a good short break.

The amazing tall Karri trees were a constant companion. Though even some other trees tried to impress us. Have a look at the face on this one.

Beavis campsite is always a fabulous campsite to visit. Of course, only one person dared to swim (no prize for guessing who). The rats were very hungry and managed to track down an apple in Gabriele's pack, but of course didn't unzip it to get in - they just went right through the pack!

One of my favourite sections is the Wirraway rail formation and the bridge nearby with the same name. The formation is a flat, long and sometimes very straight section of track which not only makes the walking easy, but also very pleasant as you meander through the sheltered forest high above the valley. The bridge is also an attraction which is simple but clever in design. It is a huge log over the creek, modified to be used as a bridge.

The walk from Boarding House to Tom Road along the Donnelly River was spectacular. Following old railway formations and stopping at various rapids were some of the highlights. Some of us also counted nine old trestle bridges - well, at least the location of them - sadly many have been destroyed.

With abundant sunshine, every lunch break was a treat. Great to get out those damp tents and dry them out. Green's Island was transformed instantly!

Whilst Donnelly River Village is commonly recognised as the halway point, and it is where the halfway party is being held this weekend, in terms of distance, the halfway point is just south of Tom Road campsite at about Gregory Road. There, we crossed the line (made up of Steve's smelly socks - how appropriate!) and we gave ourselves a little hoorah and a pat on the back. Well done everyone!

Well, now we are relaxing in Donnelly River Village and over 100 people are expected for the party on Saturday night. Then it's onto Balingup!

How time is flying!!
