Northcliffe to Pemberton

The walkers reached Pemberton on Saturday 9th August after leaving Northcliffe on Thursday 7th August.

Here is their story about the next three days of the trek.

We left bright and early on Thursday morning for our trek to Pemberton. A new group of sectional walkers joined us for an easy day out to Schafer Campsite (14km).

Schafer campsite has a wonderful dam (you can swim if you are brave enough!) in front of the shelter. We arrived early enough to have lunch at the campsite – the first time so far.

In the afternoon, Sid Sepkus from DEC in Northcliffe paid us a visit and gave us some insight into the construction of the Bibbulmun Track in the late 90’s, his role within DEC and the current issues faced by the district. Thanks Sid! Your talk was not only informative but also gave the walkers a good idea about how the Track is managed.

The fire was already lit for us when we arrived (thanks Mac!), but some (Kathy) decided to get too close to the detriment of their camp shoes!

The next day was nice and sunny as we packed up to make our way to Warren Campsite, getting deeper and deeper into Karri country! Unfortunately, Alan’s ankles did not want to take the journey and he was taken to Pemberton thanks to Dave from the Northcliffe school and DEC.

Some of you may be aware that a special ritual exists which takes place at almost every lunch break on the Track - the ceremonial fly drying. For the uninitiated, a fly is the outer sheet of one’s tent, not an important part of one’s trousers (which may or may not require drying).

After lunch we made our way across the Warren River on the historic 150m trestle rail bridge. The bridge now is only open to walkers but must have been a sight to see in its hey-day.

Warren campsite is perched up on a hill in the Karri forest with views through the magnificent trees and over the Warren River valley. Once again, the fire was lit and awaiting our arrival.

We had a lovely lunch at the Cascades and were just in time to say goodbye to the tourists on the Pemberton tramway. This meant that we had the area all to ourselves to enjoy before making our way into Pemberton.

We were met in Pemberton by locals and schoolchildren who walked down the main street with us. Many thanks to all involved for the warm welcome!

We are now enjoying yet another rest day in Pemberton, in the relaxed surrounds of the Pemberton Camp School.

Our next stop is Donnelly River Village – the half way point!!!! See you at the party!
