Balingup to Collie

The walkers reached Collie on Saturday 23rd August after leaving Balingup on Wednesday 20th August.

The journey continues...

We left Balingup with a spring in our step even though we didn't have a rest day. The weather remained fine and the bush provided us with a very interesting walk with some amazing stands of Grass Tree.

As we arrived at Grimwade campsite, some volunteers had already made their way in and set up a wonderful surprise afternoon tea for all the walkers. Thanks to Wendy Pittick and her crew who brought in homemade cakes and delectable slices. What a spread!

We then had a visit from DEC ranger Dave Lathwell, who gave us a very interesting talk about his role over many years with the Bibbulmun Track and other programmes such as Western Shield, DEC's conservation program for native animals. Thanks Dave!

With so much sunny weather, the bush turned on a wonderful display of colour for us. So many wildflowers are out already that our photos are dominated by flora. Of course my favourites are the orchids and we have seen many. Here are just three.

The first Bird Orchid                Our first Donkey Orchid                                         Abundant Snail Orchids

And of course the many colours of forest...

The Hovea                                              Fragrant Brown Boronia                                          Clematis and Hibertia

 Hakea

 and the Acacias

Let's not forget the fauna. The birds were too quick for the camera but this beautiful butterfly stayed still enough to pose for a photo.

Then there were the non-natives - no not weeds - the walkers! Can you believe these guys who are walking to Balingup for the Medieval Carnivale? The chainmail armour alone weighs about 30kg let alone the camping gear. Monty Python eat your heart out!!!

Eventually we reached Noggerup campsite and our biggest challenge yet(!) - sharing the campsite with five other walkers (four heading south and one north). What great company around a nice fire with lots to chat about.

Towards Mumballup we briefly walked along the old WAGR railway which is now disused.

A picturesque area is the Track along the Mungalup Dam used as a water source for Collie.

The community event in Collie began when a bus load of walkers joined us for the last seven kilometres into town - thanks for welcoming us!

The community celebration was at the Energy West Hall in town. The Lions, Rotary and CWA did a great job feeding the hungry walkers.

The local schools also ran an art competition which attracted some great photos and artwork. Well done kids!

In the evening we were treated to a party put on by the Rotary and Lions Clubs at Peter's farm. What a great night! Kangaroo stew, rabbit stew and yummy food for the vego's like me! Thanks for the great hospitality.

The walkers are now enjoying a rest day in Collie. Stay tuned for the next section.
