Albany Send Off

On the evening of Tuesday 15th July the walkers gathered at the Tangelhead Brewery for a pre-walk briefing followed by a social event with Foundation volunteers and staff, DEC staff and dignitaries.

The Bibbulmun Track 10th Anniversary end-to-end walk kicked-off at the Albany Town Hall on Wednesday 16th July, with invited guests including the Hon. David Templeman MLA, Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, and Cr Milton Evans, Mayor of Albany. Other guests included those who had been involved in building the Track, the volunteers who maintain it and of course the walkers.

The 10 end-to-enders, including the two walk leaders – Steve Sertis, the Foundation’s Lead Guide and Events Manager, and Mike Wood, Chairman of the Bibbulmun Track Foundation and eight sectional walkers, formed a procession with well wishes and dignitaries that headed down York Street to the Southern Terminus.

Led by bagpipers and bearing the Foundation flags and banner, the group created a colourful sight against the grey drizzle in Albany that day. A Nyoongar elder provided a Welcome to the Country at the Southern Terminus before the group headed off at 10am. Although faced with a very wet, cold and windy walk ahead, the group formed a happy bunch as they were accompanied by more than a handful of friends, family and supporters for the first 7kms.
